Zuni Jet Standing Bear Fetish with Turquoise Eye Inlays

A Zuni fetish carving of a standing bear in an upright, rearing posture — forepaws raised, mouth open, head tilted skyward — a more animated and desirable form than the standard crouching bear. The material is jet (black lignite coal): at 17.3 grams across a 2.5-inch carving, the mass is consistent with jet rather than the heavier black argillite or obsidian, and the deep matte-to-satin black surface with fine tool-mark texture is characteristic of hand-worked jet used by Zuni artisans. Both turquoise eye inlays are present and intact, the vivid blue-grey circles animating an otherwise monochromatic form. The piece carries no medicine bundle or heartline. No carver signature or hallmark has been identified.

The upright anthropomorphic stance, extended forelimbs, and expressive open mouth are consistent with contemporary Zuni fetish carving traditions, likely late 20th to early 21st century. In Zuni cosmology the bear guards the West and carries healing significance — the rearing posture amplifies that energy and is less common than the prone form, making it the more sought-after configuration among fetish collectors.
