Early American Pine Hutch Table / Bench, Convertible Settle-Table
An early American convertible hutch table — a space-saving form built for the small household, where a single piece served as both seating and dining surface. The wide plank top pivots on turned wooden pins mounted through the shaped end standards; raised, it forms the high back of a settle bench, and lowered it becomes a broad table over the lift-lid seat storage box below. Construction is solid pine throughout, joined with pinned mortise-and-tenon and exposed dovetailing at the case, with hand-shaped bracket feet and scalloped end aprons.
The form descends from 17th- and 18th-century New England and Pennsylvania farmhouse furniture, where floor space and firelight were precious and every piece earned its keep by doing double duty. The seat lifts to reveal a storage well, and the pivoting top is secured by turned pegs at each standard. Warm honeyed patina, wear to the top consistent with generations of use, and the exposed joinery all read as period country work rather than reproduction. Unmarked, as expected for vernacular furniture of this type.
CONDITION
Good. Age-appropriate wear throughout with rich patina, surface scratches, and darkened areas consistent with long use. One pivot pin is missing. The bench hinge has a hinge repair shown in supplemental reference image. Top drops and raises on the remaining pin; seat lid operates.
