Van Pelt Belgian Teak Two-Piece Bookcase-on-Chest, 1960s–70s
A two-piece Mid-Century Modern teak storage unit by Van Pelt, the Belgian manufacturer that produced Scandinavian-influenced casegoods for the European and North American export trade during the peak-teak years. The upper hutch holds one fixed center shelf flanked by two fully adjustable shelves; the lower base carries four graduated drawers fitted with carved solid teak circular ring pulls — the signature detail on these Belgian production runs. Construction is teak veneer over a particleboard/plywood substrate with solid teak edging and drawer sides.
The maker is documented rather than guessed: the back panel and drawer base are stamped "MADE IN BELGIUM," and the original retailer label survives, reading "62921 3618 / Drawer Unit 36 Teak." That paper-and-stamp pairing is uncommon for Belgian teak, where most examples reach market anonymous. The unit separates into two independent pieces, so the base functions as a standalone chest and the hutch as a standalone bookcase — a flexibility that widens where it can live. .
CONDITION
Very Good. Slight UV fading to the teak overall consistent with age. The top shelf shows discoloration. Drawers operate on the original runners and the ring pulls are intact.
