Ethan Allen Turned-Oak Long Bench with Tufted Green Wool Cushion, 1975
An Ethan Allen long bench from the maker's Traditional Classics line, built at the Maiden, North Carolina plant and dated 117-75 (1975) on the underside tag. The oak frame stands on four boldly turned baluster legs terminating in ball-and-ring feet, joined by a full H-stretcher and finished in a warm dark tone. Squared corner blocks cap each leg where it meets the seat rail, a construction detail typical of the William & Mary revival vocabulary Ethan Allen worked in during the period.
The seat carries its original upholstery — a tufted, buttoned cushion in a nubby chartreuse-green wool blend, filled with 90% urethane foam and 10% blended cotton felt per the maker's tag. The underside retains the printed Ethan Allen order label (Description: BENCH, Fabric 34722, Finish 220, Order No. 479368) along with the green "Traditional Classics" W-S cleaning-instruction card. A complete maker record like this — three surviving labels naming plant, order, fabric, and delivery date — is uncommon on a bench of this age.
CONDITION
Good overall and sturdy, with signs of use and no remarkable damage. The oak shows honest surface wear and rub-through to the finish on the feet consistent with age. Original green wool cushion is intact with tufting and buttons remaining secure.
