Freeland Modernist Landscape with Pond, Signed & Dated 1968
A brushy modernist landscape by Freeland, signed and dated lower right "Freeland 68." The composition builds a stand of trees from patches of blue, chartreuse, and deep green, the trunks scored in dark umber against loose foliage. A stretch of open lawn opens toward a pond in the foreground, its still water laid in with flat sweeps of blue-green. The paint stops short of the sheet's edges, leaving the warm tan ground exposed as a natural border and underscoring the study's spontaneous, plein-air character.
The handling — blocky color masses, visible directional strokes, and a high-key palette — places the work in the post-Impressionist and mid-century modernist tradition of landscape painting on paper. Double matted and glazed in a gilt wood frame with a green liner.
CONDITION
