Louis XV Style Carved Walnut Three-Drawer Commode with Fitted Vanity Tray
A French Provincial-style bedroom commode in figured walnut, built with a serpentine base, cabriole legs, and carved acanthus knees front and back. The case rises through three graduated dovetailed drawers — a top full-width drawer flanked by brass bail pulls, over two deeper drawers fitted with rocaille-cast brass escutcheon plates. The molded top edge caps a book-matched walnut front with strong flame and burl figure. Construction is solid wood with veneer over hardwood carcass, dovetailed drawer boxes; unmarked.
The top drawer retains a removable divided vanity tray with three shaped wells, the original fitting for dressing-table use. The carved apron centers a shell-and-scroll cartouche, and the fluted canted corners carry the Louis XV vocabulary through the case. A mid-century American interpretation of the 18th-century French commode form, the type turned out in quantity for bedroom suites of the 1930s–40s.
CONDITION
Fair. Age-appropriate finish wear throughout with scratches, staining, and finish loss to the top; the veneer along the lower drawer edge is lifting and chipped in areas. One front leg is chipped with a piece missing at the foot. Drawers slide and the fitted tray is present.
