Brutalist Welded Iron Victorian House Sculpture, Style of Guy Pullen, 1973
A brutalist sculpture of a Victorian row house, hand-built entirely from welded iron rod with torch-colored roof panels in russet and flame tones, gilt shingled gables, and gilt-framed windows. The open latticework construction renders clapboard siding, a raised entry stoop with solid welded stair treads, a second-story balcony, and a covered porch in remarkable dimensional detail — the entry doors carry miniature red panels suggesting curtained glass.
The work aligns closely with the wire Victorian house sculptures of California artist Guy Pullen (d. 2010), whose pieces were typically flat-backed for wall display; this example belongs to the far scarcer freestanding format, fully finished on both elevations with the rear facade carrying its own gabled dormers, balcony, and roofline. A welded script signature, believed to read Tyko Verna, and the date 73 run along the right side of the base rail, marking this as unique studio work from the height of the American brutalist metal movement.
CONDITION
Good condition with no damage. Original torch-applied color and dark patina present throughout, consistent with the piece as made.
