Mitchell & Russell Edinburgh Sterling Teaspoons, 1816–17, Set of 5 — "CC"
A matched set of five Fiddle pattern teaspoons by Mitchell & Russell of Edinburgh, carrying full Scottish hallmarks that date the group to 1816–17. The verso marks include the M&R maker's cartouche, the Edinburgh assay castle, the date letter, and the George III duty head confirming the plate was assayed and tax-paid under the 1784 Plate Duty Act. Each handle terminal is engraved with a script "CC" monogram, uniform across all five pieces.
The consistent monogram indicates the spoons were ordered or gifted together for a single household — a common practice among Scottish families of the Regency period, when matched flatware marked a family's standing at the table. The Fiddle pattern, with its broad shouldered terminal and clean lines, was the dominant British flatware form of the early 19th century, and Edinburgh work of this date is prized for the clarity of its assay office marks.
CONDITION
Good. Surfaces carry heavy tarnish and toning throughout, with one bowl showing a dent. Bowls and handles show wear consistent with age and use. We'll leave the polishing to you.
