Louis XIV Os de Mouton Carved Walnut Armchairs, Chinoiserie Toile, Pair
There is a particular kind of room that announces itself before you even sit down. These chairs are the reason. The os de mouton frame — that exaggerated serpentine leg and scrolled H-stretcher that 17th-century French cabinetmakers practically weaponized for drama — is carved in solid walnut with acanthus detailing along the arm supports and knees, tight volutes at the feet, and a high rectangular back that holds the room at attention. The frame alone is a statement. Then you look at what's covering it.
A custom chinoiserie narrative print wraps every upholstered surface: junks on open water, processions of robed figures on golden shores, wind-bent pines, craggy mountains dissolving into amber cloud. The scenes shift as the pattern falls across each chair, so no two panels read exactly alike — back and seat tell different chapters of the same story. Brass nailhead trim traces every seam, the kind of finish that holds a composition together without apologizing for it. Heavy French baroque architecture. Painterly Eastern fantasy. Pulled taut and pinned. The combination shouldn't work as well as it does.
CONDITION
Very Good overall. Frames are sound, carving is crisp, and joinery is tight throughout. Custom upholstery and nailhead trim show only light handling wear consistent with age and use; no remarkable damage to either chair.
