Talavera Cockatoo Wall Planter & Dove Garden Planter, Pair

A pair of hand-painted Mexican Talavera ceramic bird planters, both maker-marked and glazed in the polychrome floral vocabulary the tradition is known for. The wall-mountable cockatoo is molded in profile with a raised green-and-blue crest, yellow beak, and terracotta-red plumage, its body decorated with cobalt star-bursts, orange lattice, and green foliate scrolls against a white ground. The dove-form planter stands on its own, cobalt-headed with a red beak and a deep planting cavity opening between the wing and tail, densely painted with blue and orange blossoms, feather fans, and dotted grounds.

Talavera Poblana descends from Spanish maiolica traditions brought to Puebla in the 16th century, and pieces of this type — figural planters and wall pockets — remain a mainstay of garden and courtyard décor across the borderland. Both birds carry the tin-glazed brilliance and freehand brushwork that separate genuine Talavera from mass-market imitations. Sold together as a two-piece lot.

CONDITION

Good, with signs of prior outdoor display. Both pieces show scratches and finish wear/loss; crazing is present in the dove planter's interior pot. No breaks or chips. Wear is consistent with age and garden use.
