Remington Standard No. 10 Typewriter, c. 1908 — Serial RC75919
The Remington Standard No. 10 arrived in 1908 as the company's answer to the growing demand for a faster, more reliable front-strike machine — one where the typist could actually see the line being typed, rather than waiting for the carriage to drop. It was a decisive shift from the blind-writing Remington No. 6 and No. 7 that preceded it, and the No. 10 became the dominant office standard through the First World War era and into the 1920s. The open typebasket, the exposed segment, and the four-bank keyboard with red-capped tab and margin keys were exactly what the modern office looked like in 1910. Serial RC75919 dates this machine to approximately 1908–1910, placing it in the earliest production run of the No. 10 series.
The gilt Remington legend across the black paper table is intact, as is the red-and-gold "Standard Remington Typewriter — To Save Time is to Lengthen Life" seal decal beneath it. Nickel-plated carriage rails, twin platen knobs, and the sweeping nickel carriage-return lever survive in complete original configuration. Behind the keyboard, the original alignment guide strip reads its pre-printed legend — Street / City / Yours / NAME / STREET — a reminder that these machines were built not just for correspondence but for the industrial-scale paperwork of early American commerce. The heavy cast-iron base, open frame architecture, and exposed mainspring drum make this one of the more visually compelling objects the typewriter era produced. It belongs on a shelf where the mechanics can be read from across the room.
CONDITION
Fair. Age-appropriate paint loss, scuffing, scratches, and oxidation throughout; the paper table carries heavy surface rust. The "V" key is stuck, several keys are sticky, and the machine will require servicing before it will type. Frame and keyboard are complete.
