Set of Four Carved Mahogany Rose-Back Side Chairs, Tapestry Seats
A matched set of four solid mahogany side chairs in the Tell City rose-back tradition, each crest rail centered with a deeply carved rose-and-scroll medallion above a shaped ladder splat. The sabre-leg front stance and gently splayed rear legs give the frames their characteristic Regency-derived line, joined by turned side and rear stretchers for stability. Slip seats are dressed in a striped floral tapestry with ribbon-and-bloom motifs.
These rose-carved chairs were a mid-century American dining staple, produced in quantity through the 1940s and 1950s and prized for the hand-finished carving that reads well around a table. The set presents as a cohesive group, with the carved crest and slip-seat construction consistent across all four.
CONDITION
Fair overall, sturdy and serviceable with age-appropriate wear throughout. Finish wear, scratches, and scuffing are present across the frames, with rubbing to the high points of the carved crests. One seat rail shows a repaired split with old glue and filler, and previous repairs are noted at joints; upholstery is soiled with light staining.
