18th-C. French Provincial Fruitwood Two-Door Enfilade Buffet, Rocaille Carving
Six feet of warm fruitwood with an oak-grained top, carved for a country dining room and built to last centuries — which it has. The facade moves: a serpentine apron drops to a carved central roundel and sweeps up to cabriole feet, while each cupboard door carries a paneled rocaille cartouche crowned by opposing C-scroll volutes. Two shaped drawers ride above, fitted with original wrought-iron ring pulls with the hand-forged irregularity that no reproduction has ever quite matched. The working key still hangs on its multicolored tassel.
Open the doors and the interior surprises — two removable shelves in a cabinet lined with red-and-gold Provençal-print fabric, fragrant with generations of use. The back is solid vertical boards, the drawers are dovetailed, the pintle hinges and pierced escutcheons are original iron. At 20 inches deep, it was made to hug a wall and command a room, and it still does both.
CONDITION
Good overall, wax finish. Scratches, scuffs, fading, and finish wear throughout; water rings to one side of the top and staining consistent with age and use. Locks are fully functional, key included. Past restoration to the rear feet and stiles is stable, with old worm channeling present to the rear structural members.
