Description

Poterie de la Madeleine Anduze Green Emaille Glazed Terracotta Garden Urn

A monumental Anduze-form garden urn from Poterie de la Madeleine, the storied atelier of Anduze in the Gard, Provence. The vessel is thrown in red terracotta and finished in the classic verte émaillé (green) glaze that pools and streaks over the swelling body, deepening at the flared collar and thinning across the raised relief. Applied decoration follows the traditional Anduze vocabulary: a swag garland of rose clusters looped between tasseled terminals, punctuated by flanking medallions. The footed pedestal base carries molded ring detail, and the interior is left unglazed over a single drainage hole.

Two distinct maker's marks confirm the origin. An incised script reading "La Madeleine / Anduze" runs across the upper body, and a raised medallion seal reads "Poterie La Madeleine — Anduze, Gard" around a heraldic shield within a laurel wreath. Anduze pottery traces to 17th-century Languedoc, first made for the orangeries of French nobility, and La Madeleine remains among the oldest active ateliers working in the wood-fired, hand-thrown tradition. The green colorway with full swag relief is the most collectible expression of the form. This is a single large example, standing 31" high at 147 lbs.

CONDITION

Good. Multiple minor glaze chips scattered across the body, rim, and relief terminals expose the red terracotta beneath — consistent with age and garden use — with the most visible loss at the rolled rim. No cracks or structural damage. The unglazed interior shows an "U5fl" inventory notation in marker at the base.
