Two Hand-Carved Wood Boxes — Floral Inlay & Iron-Strapped Chest Form
A pair of small hand-carved wood boxes. The larger is a flat-topped rectangular casket with a densely carved floral and foliate lid surrounding a central oval panel of geometric bone or shell inlay in a starburst pattern, the sides carved in matching scrolling floral relief. It opens on brass hinges to a blue felt-lined interior. The smaller box takes a domed chest form, its top and body banded in black-painted iron strapwork with sawtooth and scalloped detailing secured by decorative studs, fitted with a swing-arm iron hasp closure and iron hinges.
Both boxes show clear hand-work in the carving and applied metal, the inlaid box favoring a decorative dressing-table role and the iron-bound box a sturdier keepsake or trinket function. Sold together as a two-piece lot.
CONDITION
Good. The larger inlaid box has been previously glued as shown. Carving shows softened detail and age wear; a few inlay elements are chipped/absent. The smaller iron-bound box shows surface wear and light paint loss to the strapwork consistent with age and handling.
