Tom Seely Furniture Solid Oak Two-Drawer Console Table, Signed 2000
A Shaker-inspired console table in solid oak from Tom Seely Furniture, the Tennessee-based workshop known for hand-built antique reproductions and classic American forms. The narrow rectangular top overhangs a case fitted with two dovetailed drawers, each faced with a raised recessed panel and fitted with polished brass knobs. Four 1¾" tapered legs carry the piece with the clean, restrained line that defines the Shaker vocabulary.
Construction shows honest cabinet work throughout: pinned mortise-and-tenon joinery at the aprons, hand-cut dovetails on the drawer boxes, and a fully finished back that allows the table to float in a room rather than sit against a wall. The underside of the left drawer is signed and dated in ink "Dennis Emrick, 1-26-2000" above the branded Tom Seely Furniture maker's stamp, giving this piece a direct maker identification and firm build date. Equally at home as a sofa table, entry console, or hall table.
History
Tom Seely Furniture operated out of Tennessee and built its reputation on Shaker and Early American reproduction furniture rendered in solid domestic hardwoods — primarily oak, cherry, and maple. The shop positioned itself squarely in the American studio-craft tradition: production furniture, yes, but built by hand to cabinet standards rather than factory tolerances. Pieces were signed by the individual craftsman who built them — a practice more common to art furniture studios than to production shops, and one that gives Tom Seely pieces a traceability unusual for their price point. Dennis Emrick was one of the shop's craftsmen active around the turn of the millennium; his signature here dates the piece to January 26, 2000.
CONDITION
Good and sturdy overall. Finish wear is present across the surface, with a chip to the lower left corner of the right drawer and additional finish wear to the top right rear. Scattered light stains and surface marks consistent with use. Drawers operate smoothly on their dovetailed boxes.
