Description

Bassano Italian Majolica Strawberry Shortcake Trompe-l'Oeil Lidded Server

It looks exactly like a strawberry shortcake — and that is entirely the point. Bassano del Grappa workshops in the Veneto perfected this kind of full-commitment trompe-l'oeil majolica through the mid-20th century: objects that stop conversation the moment they enter a room. This one earns it. The whipped-cream lid ripples and peaks as if piped that morning, dotted with individually modeled strawberries carrying seeded texture and green calyx detail. The two cake layers render golden sponge in swirled glaze, girdled by dense rows of berries at every tier. The underplate carries its own ring of sculptural fruit. None of it is applied decal or screen transfer — every element is hand-modeled and hand-painted, exactly as the impressed Bassano ewer mark promises.

What lifts this above shelf décor is the engineering underneath the spectacle: the piece separates cleanly into three functional components — domed lid, deep strawberry-studded bowl, and underplate — making it a working covered server disguised as a centerpiece. The inscription on the base reads "33/110/L Costa — Made in Italy." Put it on a buffet table and watch what happens when someone reaches for the cake.

CONDITION

Good overall. Craquelure throughout the white glaze is consistent with this type and adds character rather than detracting from the piece. Several touched-up chips are present throughout, primarily along the modeled strawberries and cake edges. All three components seat together properly.
