HK Alabaster Robed Pueblo Woman Carving, Incised Star Motifs, Bull Hallmark
A hand-carved alabaster figure of a standing woman wrapped in a manta, worked to be seen fully in the round. The warm rose-brown banding of the stone runs through the drape of the robe, and the carver has aligned the natural striations so the alabaster itself reads as folded textile. Incised parallel lines trace the fall of the blanket, and eight-pointed star motifs are cut across all four sides. The rough-textured crown and chest contrast against the polished body — a deliberate handling that separates hair and beadwork from the smooth wrap of the manta. The face is finished with quiet, downcast features, and the deep translucent rose tone gives the whole a soft internal glow.
The robed female figure and repeated star iconography are consistent with Pueblo imagery from the New Mexico–Arizona corridor, where alabaster carving carries a strong regional tradition drawing on Colorado and New Mexico quarry stone. The base is signed HK and carries an incised bull pictogram hallmark — a personal maker's mark rather than a workshop stamp.
CONDITION
Excellent. No damage. The polished surfaces are clean and the incised star and line work remain crisp; natural veining and mineral banding are inherent to the stone, not flaws.
