Sonoran Ironwood Bird Carvings — Pelican & Gambel's Quail, Pair
A pair of single-piece hand carvings in ironwood (Olneya tesota), the dense desert hardwood prized by Sonoran carvers for its chocolate-to-ebony grain and glasslike polish. The larger figure is a pelican, rendered in a smooth modernist-folk idiom — the bill folded against a swelling breast, the whole form rising from a deliberately rough-hewn natural base that contrasts the burnished body above. The smaller carving is a Gambel's quail, identifiable by its distinctive forward-curving topknot plume; the state bird of Arizona and a fixture of the Sonoran Desert. Neither piece carries a maker's mark or signature.
CONDITION
Good with no damage. Both carvings retain their high-polish finish on the upper bodies, with the intentionally rougher natural texture preserved at the bases as carved.
