Folk Art Welded Steel Horned Lizard Sculpture in Lavender & Rust Patina
A hand-fabricated steel garden sculpture of a horned lizard — New Mexico's beloved "horny toad" — built from cut and welded sheet steel with a broad, spike-fringed body and articulated splayed limbs. The maker leaned into the animal's defensive bristle: a crown of cranial horns, jagged flank spikes, and a long tapered tail give the piece real menace at a small scale. Punched vent holes across the back read as the reptile's dorsal texture, and the four webbed feet plant it in a low, wide crouch.
The surface tells its own story — the dorsal shell carries a weathered lavender-blue paint layer worn down to bare metal, while the legs, horns, and feet have oxidized to a warm russet rust. The contrast between the faded top coat and the raw rusted extremities gives the sculpture a convincing sun-and-weather patina, whether earned outdoors or applied by the maker's hand. A characterful piece of regional folk art suited to a shelf, entry, or garden bed.
CONDITION
Good and structurally solid. Rust across the legs, horns, and feet is part of the intended finish; the lavender body paint shows honest wear to bare steel. Welds are intact and the piece stands on its own.
