Description

Adrian Pearsall Walnut Stingray Coffee Table for Craft Associates, 1960s

A sculptural coffee table with a solid walnut base in the recognizable "Stingray" (Bowtie) form — two concave, hourglass-shaped stretcher elements joined by a central cylindrical crossbar, terminating in four upright cylindrical pins that cradle the glass. The organic carving and softened taper of each element are hallmarks of Adrian Pearsall's work for Craft Associates of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and the base construction, proportion, and form are consistent with documented Pearsall production, circa 1960–1968.

Pearsall (1925–2011) built his reputation on this brand of organic sculptural modernism, and the Stingray base ranks among his most collectible forms. The rectangular glass top is a non-original replacement — a heavyweight 3/4-inch float panel with rounded corners that reads clean and sits with more substance than many factory originals. The glass detaches from the base for handling. Crossover appeal to both mid-century furniture and organic-modernism buyers broadens the field on this one.

History

Adrian Pearsall designed for Craft Associates from the mid-1950s into the 1970s, shaping much of the sculptural walnut vocabulary now synonymous with American residential modernism of the era. The Stingray/Bowtie base — with its paired concave stretchers and pin-supported top — is one of the forms most closely identified with his studio, and its continued demand among collectors reflects that recognition.

CONDITION

Base grades Excellent — solid, tight, with the walnut showing well and only minor honest wear. Glass grades Very Good, with scratches and imperfections throughout consistent with use. Glass is a non-original replacement.
