19th Century Maple Four-Drawer Chest with Turned Wood Pulls
A country-made chest of drawers in solid maple, its warm honeyed grain running with subtle figure across the drawer fronts and a broad plank top. Four graduated drawers of dovetailed construction ride on wooden runners, each fitted with turned wood knobs and a keyhole escutcheon — though no key is present. The paneled sides and wood-panel back point to solid, workmanlike joinery rather than veneered casework, and the flared bracket base finishes the form with a straightforward country line.
Chests of this pattern were the workhorse case pieces of mid-19th-century American households, made by regional cabinetmakers across the Northeast and beyond. The turned knobs and simple molded top place it in the transitional period after hardware pulls gave way to lathe-turned wooden knobs. Marks of long use across the top and drawer fronts read as an honest working history rather than restoration.
CONDITION
Good, with age-appropriate wear throughout. Surface shows scratches, chips, scuffing, and areas of finish wear and loss; the top has wear and a small split, and one side carries a chip on the bottom leg. The case sits slightly wobbly. No key included.
