Folk Art Steel & Barbed Wire Column Cactus Sculpture
A hand-fabricated columnar cactus built from folded sheet steel, standing over four and a half feet tall on a heavy oval base plate. Vertical ribs of steel form the fluted body, each seam run with twisted galvanized wire and barbed wire that reads convincingly as the cactus's spine rows. The crown is finished with a burst of frayed, splayed steel mimicking a blossom or the plant's growing tip — consistent with a barrel or organ pipe form rather than a branching saguaro.
The piece has spent time outdoors, and the resulting warm rust patina over the steel gives the sculpture its convincing desert coloring — the oxidation is part of the effect here, not a flaw to work against. The contrast between the smooth rusted panels and the bright silvered barbed wire spines makes for a graphic silhouette that works equally well in a courtyard, garden, or entryway. A sculptural nod to the Chihuahuan and Sonoran desert landscape.
CONDITION
Good. Rust and oxidation throughout with signs of outdoor use — this weathered patina is integral to the piece's character. Steel panels and barbed wire spines remain sound and securely attached; the base plate is stable and self-supporting.
