19th-Century American Pine One-Drawer Side Table, Turned Legs
A country-made pine side table of the mid-19th century, built on four slender turned legs that taper to button feet. The apron holds a single dovetailed drawer fitted with a pair of turned wood knobs, and the two-board top shows the honest patina of long use — nail heads, knots, and a warm aged surface. Construction is straightforward and vernacular: this is a piece made by a rural or self-taught cabinetmaker rather than a factory, and it carries no maker's mark.
Tables of this form served as washstands, work tables, and bedside stands in American farmhouses through the second half of the 1800s. The turned Sheraton-style legs place it squarely in that tradition, while the single wide drawer and simple pine case speak to its practical, everyday origins. A red stain to the top and general wear tell the story of generations of use.
CONDITION
Fair. Scuffing, finish wear and loss, staining, and discoloration throughout, including a distinct red stain to the top and scratches and scuffs across the surfaces. The two-board top shows a separation along the joint; drawer operates and retains both original knobs.
