Bowen Watercolor — San Francisco Victorian Streetscape
A confident watercolor streetscape rendering a San Francisco Victorian flanked by neighboring flats, signed Bowen at lower right. The composition centers on an ornate bay-fronted rowhouse — carved gable, spindled porch, arched fanlight window — flanked by a tall bay-windowed flat at left and a tile-roofed building at right, with a parked car anchoring the lower foreground. The palette runs to dusty rose, mauve, and warm ochre against a loosely washed blue sky.
The handling is characteristic of California plein-air watercolor practice: crisp reserved whites carry the light, while wet-in-wet passages soften the sky and shadowed facades. The artist leans on architectural geometry — repeating window grids and roofline silhouettes — to structure the scene, letting the pigment do the atmospheric work. Watercolor on paper, framed and matted under a gilt molding.
CONDITION
Good with no remarkable damage to the sheet. Finish loss to the gilt frame, with red bole showing through along the molding edges. Framed and matted without glass.
