Wall-Hanging Relief Roundel with Bones, Shells & a Crouching Figure, Signed
A dense, high-relief circular wall plaque worked across its entire face with an interlocking field of imagery — radiating fan shells and scallops, scattered bones, and a crouching nude figure drawn up on the right side, head bowed against the rim. The surface carries a dark blackened patina with passages of warm rust-brown and ochre breaking through the recesses, giving the relief strong depth and shadow. A decorated border band runs around the upper edge with small repeating impressions. The piece is signed Havih, with an additional incised mark and lettering set into the lower-right field; further indistinct writing appears on the reverse.
The imagery — shells, skeletal forms, and a contracted human figure — reads as a memento mori or vanitas-type composition, the kind of allegorical density favored by studio sculptors working in cast or modeled relief. The reverse is fitted with a wire hanger for wall display and retains traces of red stenciled lettering.
CONDITION
Very Good with no remarkable damage. Surface shows age-appropriate patina variation, with darkened high points and warmer tones in the recesses. Wire hanging hardware on the reverse is intact and functional.
