South Persian Kilim, Red Field with Diamond Lattice, Third Quarter 20th Century
Handwoven South Persian kilim in wool, with a deep madder-red field organized into a dense lattice of stepped and hooked diamonds. Each medallion is worked in orange, camel, ivory, and black, many carrying a small cross or hooked motif at the center — a tribal vocabulary read across the flatwoven surface of SW Iran. The field is framed by a checkerboard-and-reciprocal border running to a black guard stripe, then an outer band of small squares in graduated color.
The weave runs roughly 9 warp × 8 weft, slit-tapestry throughout, unmarked as is typical of village and nomadic work. One end retains its cotton fringe; the opposite end finishes without. Country of origin Iran; type consistent with South Persian tribal weaving of the third quarter of the 20th century. Wool pile-free construction keeps the piece flat and reversible, suited to floor or wall.
CONDITION
Fair. Color run/bleed is present throughout the field. There is a dime-sized hole in the field and loss to the fringe at one end. Weave is otherwise sound with age-appropriate handling wear.
