Persian Hamadan Hossainabad Wool Runner, Rose Field, Herati Design, c. 1950s–70s
A hand-knotted Hamadan village runner from the Hossainabad weaving district, worked in 100% wool pile on a cotton foundation at approximately 270 knots per square inch. The rose-to-terracotta field carries an allover Herati-style pattern — angular vinework, diamond rosettes, and stylized botanical sprays in indigo, teal, brown, ivory, and soft blue. A narrow guard-and-main border system in cream and rust frames the field, the main band filled with a turtle-palmette repeat. The maker's mark and origin data appear on the affixed cotton and printed labels documented in the reference images.
Hamadan province in western Iran has been one of the country's most prolific rug-producing regions for over a century, its village looms known for durable single-wefted construction and bold geometric readings of classical Persian motifs. The color shift across this runner's length — the field lightening from a deep madder red at one end to a faded rose at the other — is characteristic uneven sun-fading from years of directional light exposure, a trait many buyers prize for the aged, sun-warmed patina it lends. Third quarter of the 20th century.
CONDITION
Moderate. Structurally whole with even pile and secure ends. Notable uneven sun-fading gives a pronounced gradient across the field; light wear to the selvedges and general discoloration consistent with age and use.
