Early Six-Board Pine Blanket Chest with Boot-Jack Ends & Till, 19th C.
A classic American six-board chest of the earliest and most economical form, each face built from a single wide solid board. The front and back panels rise to a hinged plank lid; the two end boards extend below the case and are cut into shaped boot-jack feet, the raised skirt scalloped with a simple applied bracket. The exterior wears an old red-brown surface, worn to bare wood along the high edges, over softwood construction throughout.
Inside, the case retains its original fixed till — a small compartment at one end for valuables or small goods — measuring roughly 4" × 5¾" × 13¾". The interior shows old scribe lines, knots, and the tool marks of hand construction. A retaining chain steadies the lid when open. Chests of this pattern served as the primary storage furniture of rural New England and Mid-Atlantic households for generations; the plain boot-jack end and single-board construction place it squarely in the vernacular tradition rather than the joiner's shop.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. The lock mechanism has been removed, leaving an empty keyhole in the front board, and a section of trim is absent from the right side of the lid. Structurally sturdy; authentically rustic surface with scattered paint loss, scratches, and old repairs to one end board including a patched knot loss.
