Description

C. Ahrenfeldt Limoges Yellow & Gilt 43-Pc Dessert & Bouillon Service

Saturated canary yellow was not a timid choice. A hostess who commissioned this service from C. Ahrenfeldt of Limoges wanted her table to announce itself — and it does. The service unites three distinct vessel forms under one bold color story: eleven small demitasse cups paired with their saucers, three larger teacups, and ten double-handled bouillon bowls that graduate from cream at the base through a warm ivory band to a vivid yellow interior, all handles and banding traced in gold. The plates center a stylized black-latticework basket heaped with brightly colored fruit — red, yellow, teal, and black — set against a white well and framed by the same canary-and-gilt border that ties the entire service together.

The green underglaze stamp reads C. Ahrenfeldt / Limoges / France Déposé / Patented. Charles Ahrenfeldt established his decorating and export house at Limoges in the 1890s, building a reputation as one of the premier suppliers of finished porcelain to the American market through the early 20th century. The bold color blocking, the graphic fruit-basket motif rendered in near-flat polychrome, and the clean gilt banding are characteristic of Limoges export production from the 1920s–1930s — Art Deco's influence arriving at the breakfast table in the form of chrome-yellow glaze and a basket of stylized lemons. Forty-three pieces in strong concordance is a genuinely useful inheritance; the mix of dessert plates, demitasse settings, and bouillon service makes this a working table grouping, not a display-only relic.
