Tlaquepaque Mexican Hand-Painted Hen-on-Nest Covered Bowl
A figural Tlaquepaque redware hen-on-nest, hand-painted in the bright palette characteristic of the Jalisco pottery district near Guadalajara. The lidded form pairs a seated hen — modeled with a brown comb and wattle, yellow beak, and tail feathers stroked in blue, ochre, and terracotta — over a basketweave-relief base glazed in lime green with woven bands of blue, rust, yellow, and black. Scrolled wing detailing and sgraffito-like incised feathers run across the body, each line filled by hand.
The underside is marked "Mexico" in blue script. Tlaquepaque has produced this style of brightly glazed earthenware for the tourist and decorative trade since the early 20th century, and figural lidded vessels like this hen were among its most popular forms. The two-part construction allows the base to serve as a shallow bowl when the hen lid is lifted.
CONDITION
Good overall with age-appropriate wear. Chipping to the bowl rim and glaze losses along the basketweave band, with several small chips to the body. Glaze surface remains bright and glossy.
