Description

Barbara F. Hughes "Welcome to the Wedding Bonnet" Woodblock Print, 4/50

A limited-edition woodblock print by Barbara F. Hughes, signed in pencil lower right and titled lower left in the artist's hand, with edition number 4/50 penciled in the bottom margin. The scene stages a folk wedding procession against a blazing orange-red ground: bare winter trees in brown and grey recede into the background while a cast of costumed figures fills the foreground — a fur-capped man with a staff, a young woman extending a lace-trimmed bonnet with yellow streamers, an exuberant central dancer with arms raised, elders in studded and embroidered coats, a small child, and a silhouetted black cat observing the whole affair from the lower right. Hughes builds her figures from stenciled florets, polka dots, dot-and-dash embroidery borders, and graphic linework, laying them across flat blocks of olive, teal, taupe, and cream. The effect is closer to textile art than conventional pictorial printmaking — each figure reads as a pattern within a pattern.

Hughes worked in a mid-century American narrative printmaking tradition deeply drawn to Eastern European and Slavic folk sources. The subject here — a wedding procession with its ceremonial bonnet, dowry chest, musicians, and village attendants — reflects a well-developed body of work in this genre, executed with the deliberate naïveté of rounded, mask-like faces and the visual density of embroidered fabric. Presented in a slim metal frame, matted behind glass.

CONDITION

Very Good. No remarkable damage noted. Colors remain bright and the sheet presents cleanly within the mat. Work is examined framed under glass; full sheet and verso are not accessible without disassembly.
