L.B. Porter Sonoran Desert Watercolor — Cowboy & Saguaro Landscape

An original transparent watercolor on paper by Lawrence Benjamin (L.B.) Porter (b. 1929), signed lower left in ink, "L.B. Porter." The composition opens across Sonoran Desert scrubland: a towering saguaro flanked by palo verde and dense desert shrubs, drifts of prickly pear catching the light in the foreground, and a solitary cowboy on horseback moving through the open country under a broad, clouded sky. The loose, wet handling, paper texture at the sheet edges, and characteristic pigment granulation confirm the transparent watercolor medium. Porter's signature technique — strong contrast between light and shadow — drives the scene, the cool shadowed brush set against sun-warmed golden grasses.

Porter is a third-generation El Pasoan and New Mexico resident since 1953, a full-time professional artist from 1965 onward whose subject matter centers on the land and people of the region. He earned BS, BA, and MA degrees in fine art from New Mexico State University and spent five years as a Visual Information Specialist on the General's staff at White Sands Missile Range. Elected to the Knickerbocker Artists of America (1995) and the El Paso Artists' Hall of Fame (1997), Porter has work held in private and museum collections across the United States and abroad. The Sonoran setting and Western figure place this firmly within his documented Borderlands subject matter, with direct appeal to the Las Cruces and El Paso collector base.
