Prince Albert Crimp Cut Tobacco Tin — R.J. Reynolds, Edward VII Portrait
A large round Prince Albert Crimp Cut pipe and cigarette tobacco tin from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, Winston-Salem, N.C. The familiar red ground carries the gilt block lettering, cream banding, and the central oval portrait of the bearded gentleman in frock coat — the figure the brand borrowed for its name. The reverse panel reproduces the long-running marketing copy: "Tobacco is prepared for smokers under the process discovered in making experiments…," closing with the brand's signature line, "DOES NOT BITE THE TONGUE."
The base panel notes the process patent of July 30th, 1907, and the factory mark reads Factory No. 64, Dist. of N.C. with the standard internal-revenue caution against reuse. The press-fit lid is stamped repeatedly with the Prince Albert name and "KEEP LID PRESSED DOWN TIGHT" around the rim. Well, you'd better let him out. A workhorse of the American counter-top era, this larger format held considerably more than the familiar pocket tins.
CONDITION
Good. Scratches, denting, and finish wear consistent with age and use; surface rust spotting along the lower rim and base seam. Interior empty with oxidation throughout. Lid present and seating.
