Egyptian Revival Sterling Silver Goblet with Pharaoh Mask, c. 1870
An unmarked American sterling silver goblet in the Egyptian Revival taste, its ovoid bowl centered by a boldly repoussé pharaoh's mask flanked by symmetrical scrolling foliage and a Greek-key band, with an anthemion pendant dropping below. Beaded borders frame both the rim and the stepped circular foot, while the knopped stem rises from a swelling collar with reeded ornament. The interior of the bowl retains its original gilt (vermeil) wash. The bowl front is engraved KATE L. CHAPMAN. in serifed capitals — the name of a previous owner.
The Egyptian Revival swept American decorative arts in the decades following mid-century, driven by archaeological discovery and international exhibition displays. Silversmiths of the 1860s–70s translated the fashion into hollowware exactly like this: classical goblet forms overlaid with pharaonic masks, lotus, and geometric fret. The combination of struck ornament and hand engraving here places it firmly in that vein. Interior gilt.
CONDITION
Good. Surface scratching and light handling wear throughout the polished areas, with mellow tarnish left in place — we'll leave the polishing to you. The named engraving to the bowl is a previous owner's inscription; gilt interior is largely intact with expected wear.
