Taxco Sterling Two-Handled Oval Serving Tray by R.J. — 783.7g
There is a particular kind of table presence that only solid silver can command — not plated, not polished to trick the eye, but .925 sterling with the weight to prove it. This hand-raised oval tray by Taxco silversmith R.J. carries that authority in full. The broad flat rim flows without interruption into a pair of clean squared loop handles, and the gently planished well catches light the way only hand-hammered silver does — not a perfect mirror, but something warmer and more alive. The reverse is struck "HECHO EN MEXICO D.F." and "Sterling 925", the marks of a workshop producing for export at Taxco's peak.
Taxco, in the state of Guerrero, built its modern reputation through the mid-twentieth century on exactly this kind of work: restrained form, superb material, and construction that lets the silver speak. No engraving, no ornament — just the architecture of the piece and 25 troy ounces of metal doing everything. At over 17 inches handle to handle, this tray fills a sideboard, anchors a dining table, or holds its own displayed on a shelf. It was made to be used at a serious table. It still is.
CONDITION
Good. The surface carries scattered scratches, light tarnish, and a few darkened spots consistent with use and age; some scattered pitting to the rim. We'll leave the polishing to you.
