Antique Cold-Painted Lead English Bulldog Figure, Hand-Painted, Unmarked
Cast in lead and hand-finished in layered cold paint, this small standing English Bulldog captures the breed's most defining qualities in miniature — the planted, wide-legged stance, the heavy jowled head set low on a thick neck, the wrinkled brow, and the underbite that gives the bulldog its expression of permanent, dignified skepticism. Fur texture is worked across the entire surface with confident tooling, and the eyes are rendered with small glass beads that catch the light. A russet-red collar circles the throat — one of the details that holds its paint best, offset against the mottled darks of the body.
Small painted lead animal figures in this German idiom were produced from the late 19th century through the early decades of the 20th for the decorative and novelty trade, where the English Bulldog — simultaneously a working breed and a national symbol — was a consistently popular subject. The paint loss here is extensive, but it works in the piece's favor: layers of black, brown, and cream have worn back to bare metal in the high-relief areas, producing a weathered surface with real sculptural presence.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear. Heavy finish wear and paint loss throughout, exposing bare metal across the body, face, and legs; the red collar and portions of the facial paint survive. Form is stable and fully intact.
