American Sterling Spoons & Fork, 7 Pieces — 156.4g Early 20th Century Sterling
An assembled grouping of seven American sterling pieces — six spoons and a single dinner fork — spanning the late Victorian aesthetic-movement through mid-century, several monogrammed and one named "Clare." All carry confirmed STERLING stamps and, where legible, maker's marks. The fork is marked F.M. Whiting Sterling with PAT 95 and displays a fully scrolled, high-relief Rococo Revival handle; it is monogrammed "R" within a shield-and-wreath cartouche. A matched pair of naturalistic floral spoons — one with a plain oval bowl monogrammed "P," the other bearing an iridescent patina — carry the Alvin Sterling PATENT stamp, the handle engraved "Dec 25" with the year, suggesting a Christmas gift piece. The Reed & Barton demitasse spoon in beaded-border pattern is monogrammed "AVL," and the C.R. Smith & Son shell-bowl preserve spoon carries engraved foliate decoration with a script monogram. Two additional spoons bear Sterling and other marks.
The pieces collectively represent the gift-and-keepsake culture of American silver at the turn of the century — bright-cut florals, beaded borders, repoussé rose and poppy handles, scrolled cartouches, and engraved script initials that place each piece in someone's household, at someone's table. "Clare," the most personal of the lot, is engraved by name on a spoon with an Art Nouveau handle terminating in a full sculptural flower head.
CONDITION
Good overall, consistent with age and use. Surfaces carry tarnish, light scratching, and minor wear throughout — we'll leave the polishing to you. Engraving and monograms remain legible across all pieces.
