Copco Denmark Michael Lax Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven Set — Persimmon, Pair with Lids
A matched pair of Copco Denmark enameled cast iron casseroles in the brand's most sought-after persimmon-orange glaze, each fitted with its original flat, broad lid. The lids are a deliberate design move — shallow enough to serve as a second cooking surface or trivet, so the set functions as four pieces rather than two. Angular, pierced cast handles sit proud of the body in a geometry that reads more Bauhaus than farmhouse. Interiors are glazed in cream enamel. Undersides are stamped "COPCO · DENMARK"; the smaller vessel carries the additional size designation "D3."
Copco was founded in 1960 by entrepreneur Eric Cast and built its early identity around a single creative force: New York industrial designer Michael Lax, whose cookware for the brand became among the most recognized mid-century kitchen objects produced in Scandinavia for the American market. Lax's casseroles were conceived as whole objects — form, color, and function unified — and the persimmon glaze has become the color most associated with the line. These pieces were marketed and sold in the United States through Bloomingdale's and other design-forward retailers through the 1960s and '70s, and they remain the entry point for collectors pursuing Lax's industrial design work in functional objects. The flat-lid configuration represented here is the classic Dutch oven form of the Copco line.
CONDITION
Good with honest signs of use throughout. Chips to the enamel are present at the rim of the larger piece, and edge losses are noted along the lid lips. A fine hairline mark runs through the interior wall of one piece. Bare iron undersides show oxidation and ringed casting marks consistent with age and stovetop use.
