Description

Desert Landscape Lamp & Vase Set, Hand-Thrown Stoneware

A cohesive two-piece set of hand-thrown, hand-glazed stoneware sharing a single continuous visual language: a high pale sky broken by a solitary brushed bird in flight, a distant mountain ridge rendered in soft blue-violet, and a lower register of layered rust, ochre, and dark earth tones that build toward the base in richly textured atmospheric bands. The lamp body rises on a flared foot into a broad ovoid shoulder — a generous, confident form — fitted with polished brass hardware and a wide conical linen shade. The companion vase mirrors the program in a tapering cylindrical form, the landscape wrapping its lower third in the same glaze palette. Both pieces carry the maker's signature.

The glaze technique is consistent with the wax-resist or brush-layering methods favored by American studio potters working in the scenic landscape tradition of the 1970s and 1980s — a period when artists like Wayne Bates and regional New Mexico ceramicists brought painterly narrative decoration back to the wheel-thrown vessel. The bird motif — a single dark form suspended in the pale glaze field — appears on both pieces, tying lamp and vase into a deliberate suite rather than a casual pairing. The lamp is wired with a three-way switch and includes its shade.

CONDITION

Good; fully functional. Tested and working — lamp operates correctly on all three settings. No chips or cracks noted on either piece. Light crazing throughout the vase glaze, consistent with studio firing; minor surface speckling and faint glaze drip spots to the underside of the lamp base.
