Description

Spanish Baroque Style Oak & Wrought Iron Draw-Leaf Dining Table, 20th Century

A substantial dining table in the Spanish Baroque tradition, built in solid oak with parquetry-patterned top panels set within mitered frames. The fixed center top is flanked by two pull-out draw leaves that extend the surface considerably for larger gatherings; the center panel lifts away entirely to reveal the supporting frame beneath. The trestle base carries deeply carved lyre-form legs, each terminating in scrolled volutes at both the capital and foot, set on wide stepped, molded shoes — a silhouette with clear antecedents in 17th-century Spanish and Portuguese furniture. The legs are joined by a forged wrought iron stretcher composed of twisted bar stock swept upward in a catenary curve on each side, meeting at center in a ring and forged scrollwork cluster.

The form descends from the Spanish mesa de costados — end-trestle tables where carved supports were tied by ornamental ironwork rather than a wooden lower rail, a structural and aesthetic hallmark of the Iberian tradition that carried into colonial New Mexico and Latin America through the viceregal period. The slotted-screw apron-to-leg attachment on the underside places manufacture in the 20th century, consistent with a revival in the Spanish Colonial taste; the heavily carved legs and hand-forged ironwork reflect quality craftsmanship throughout. The piece is unmarked, with chalk inventory notations to the underside. Two removable draw leaves and the lift-off center panel are included.

CONDITION

Good overall. Scratches, chipping, and scuffing present throughout; chips noted along the base of the table and a stain to the top surface. Draw leaves operate and the carved base and iron stretcher remain structurally sound.
