W.F. Taylor Signed Primitive Pine Side Stool with Tapered Legs
A solidly built primitive stool or low side table in solid pine, hand-signed W.F. Taylor in ink beneath a decorative scalloped flourish on the underside. The thick plank top has darkened to a deep, waxy patina from decades of handling, with knife scoring, gouges, and worn rounded edges that record a long working life. Four square tapered legs, each roughly 1¾" at the top, splay slightly outward and mortise into a simple aproned frame.
The form is utilitarian country furniture — equally at home as a stool, plant stand, or bedside perch. The maker's painted signature on the underside is the rare personal touch here: most pieces of this kind went unmarked, leaving Taylor's flourish a small window into the hand that built it.
CONDITION
Good and sturdy, authentically rustic. The top shows heavy gouging, indentations, knife marks, and edge wear consistent with long use; surface checking and old splits run with the grain. Joinery remains tight and the stool sits firmly.
