Description

Maple Colonial-Style Spindle-Back Rocking Chair

A solid maple rocking chair in the American Colonial Revival tradition, built around a tall spindle back rising from a saddle-shaped plank seat. The shaped crest rail spans the full width with rolled, ear-like terminals, while seven turned spindles run the length of the back. Scrolled arms terminate in rounded grips, each supported by short raked spindles. The whole frame rides on turned, ring-and-baluster legs and stretchers accented with gilt banding, set into gently upswept rockers.

The light honey finish shows the warm grain of the maple throughout, and the turnings — repeated on the front legs and the central stretcher — give the piece its decorative rhythm. A practical, sturdy rocker of the type produced in volume for mid-century American and European households, comfortable in scale and built to take daily use.

CONDITION

Good and sturdy. Light signs of use consistent with age, with no remarkable damage. Joinery is tight and the chair rocks evenly.
