Description

Baroque-Revival Black & Gilt Serpentine Three-Drawer Commode, c. 1880–1920

Black-and-gilt painted case furniture of this quality sits at the exact intersection of two markets that rarely overlap: the decorative antiques buyer who wants period atmosphere without a period price, and the interior designer who needs something that photographs like a six-figure piece. This serpentine-front commode — almost certainly Italian or Central European, late 19th to early 20th century — delivers both. The case is solid wood throughout, finished in black ground with hand-painted gilt banding forming geometric panel reserves and bold circular cartouche medallions across all three drawer fronts, the conforming sides, and the top. That last detail matters: the decoration wraps completely, floor to ceiling, nothing left plain. Most decorative painted commodes of this type cut corners on the sides. This one didn't.

Hardware is cast brass Rococo-style escutcheons with shaped keyhole surrounds — one centered on each drawer in its gilt cartouche — plus paired round floral knob pulls at left and right. All three locks are functional, and the original key is included. That combination, three working locks with a matching key on a piece this age, is worth noting plainly: it's genuinely uncommon. The bracket base carries a shaped arched apron; the drawer interiors show solid secondary wood consistent with period construction. Metal drawer slides are a later retrofit, likely replacing original wood runners at some point in the piece's working life. The gilt banding is painted rather than inlaid. Form and execution are consistent with Italian or Austro-Hungarian workshops of the Belle Époque, when black-and-gilt painted commodes served as an ebonized alternative to true Boulle or lacquer case furniture.

CONDITION

Fair. Heavy finish wear and loss throughout, most pronounced on the top where the black ground has flaked to bare wood across one corner and the gilt banding has thinned significantly in that zone. Scratching, discoloration, and surface losses to the case sides, apron, and feet are consistent with long use. All three locks function with the included key. Metal drawer slides are a later retrofit.
