Description

Antique Painted Terracotta Olive Jar Table Lamp, Banded Polychrome Body

A substantial table lamp built from an antique painted terracotta storage jar — and the jar is the story. Tapered urn form with a pronounced shoulder collar, wheel-thrown and wrapped in horizontal bands of oxblood red and ochre over an earthen ground, this is the kind of vessel that spent its working life holding oil, grain, or brine somewhere along the Mediterranean rim before someone recognized it was too compelling to stay in a storeroom. The surface carries genuine age: mineral accretion, soft paint loss, and a mottled, almost geological patina across the lower body that no faux-finish technique can convincingly replicate. It sits on a turned wood plinth and is capped with a brass and wood finial topped by an amber-toned turned ball.

Wired as a fully working lamp with a 3-way pull-chain socket and an inline switch, the piece pairs a tall tapered linen shade with the rough-hewn vessel beneath it — that contrast between refined and raw is exactly the tension that makes it work in a room. The form and banded decoration are consistent with North African and Mediterranean utilitarian pottery traditions. Shade and finial are included as shown.

CONDITION

Good and fully functional; tested and working. The terracotta body shows age-appropriate surface wear, paint loss, mineral accretion, and mottling across the body — original surface character, not damage. A section of the shoulder collar shows chipping and loss at the rim edge. Wiring operates correctly on both the 3-way pull-chain and inline switch.
