Charles X Cut Crystal Medici Urn on Gilt Bronze Paw-Foot Plinth
A monumental cut crystal urn of campana form, rising from a hobnail-cut foot through a swelling, diamond-cut lower body to a band of broad concave flutes at the waist, then flaring to a wide trumpet mouth. The upper register and shoulder carry deep, hand-cut hobnail (strawberry-diamond) fields that throw strong rainbow fire, while the central flutes keep the body open and clear. The flared rim is collared in a finely milled gilt bronze band chased with a tight rope-and-reeded pattern. The crystal is unmarked; the form, cutting vocabulary, and ormolu mounts are consistent with French Charles X / early 19th-century work, but no maker attribution can be confirmed.
The crystal foot seats into a square gilt bronze plinth with a guilloche-and-shell cast frieze, raised on four scrolled acanthus-and-rosette corner mounts terminating in lion's-paw feet — the heavy, sculptural footing typical of Restauration-period vases conceived as garniture centerpieces. The base of the urn itself is star-cut on the underside. A two-piece lot: the crystal vessel and its detachable bronze stand.
CONDITION
Good. Scratches to the interior of the bowl, with light surface scratching also present across the clear flute band. Gilt bronze mounts retain strong color with minor wear. No chips or cracks noted to the cut bands.
