Doris Sams Carved Serpentine Abstract Sculpture on Marble Base, Signed
An abstract carving in mottled green serpentine, hand-worked into a rounded, organic mass pierced by a single bored void on one face. The composition follows the modernist tradition of the truth-to-materials carvers, letting the stone's natural speckling and tonal shifts read across the sculpted planes. The surface is finished to a soft satin rather than a high polish, keeping the geological character of the stone in play across the swelling forms and recessed channels.
The piece is signed D. Sams incised at the lower edge of the front face, and a paper label affixed to the marble base reads "Free Form (Serpentine), Doris Sams". The serpentine body is mounted to a thick white marble plinth that grounds the form and provides display weight.
CONDITION
Good. The sculpture has been previously reattached to its marble base; adhesive residue is present at the join. Minor surface soiling and tonal variation to the marble plinth consistent with age and handling.
