Carved Septarian Bison Figurines, Set of 2
Pair of hand-carved bison figurines worked from septarian — the fossil concretion formed in ancient seabed muds, prized for its three-zone mineralogy: dark gray argillaceous matrix, rust-brown aragonite veining tracing the polygonal fracture lines, and pale yellow crystalline calcite filling the inner voids. The cross-sections on the unpolished bases make the septarian architecture unmistakable — a mosaic of angular septae exactly as nature formed them some 50 to 70 million years ago. Each figurine is shaped in profile with the characteristic humped shoulder and a notched suggestion of forelegs; the high polish draws a sharp contrast between the matte gray matrix and the glassy, translucent calcite pockets. The smaller figure carries a natural inclusion in the stone — an inherent feature of the material, not a flaw.
- Two pieces — large and small bison
- Material: Septarian (unmarked; no origin label)
- Polished bodies; unpolished bases
- Smaller figurine: natural stone inclusion present — inherent to the material
CONDITION
Very Good. Both figurines retain bright, even polish across all carved surfaces. The smaller piece has a natural inclusion consistent with septarian formation — not damage. Unpolished bases are raw as made.
