Antique Draft Horse Hames Pair — Forged Iron Rings & Adjustable Slotted Trace Slides
A matched pair of draft horse hames — the curved wooden arms that seated against a horse's collar to transfer pulling force from animal to load. Each arm is shaped from a single length of timber, retaining its original heavy curve and studded with round iron rivet heads down its length. The hardware is hand-forged throughout: perforated iron trace slides — the punched bars that let a teamster adjust the draft point — large open draft rings at mid-arm, and squared link terminals at the bottom tips. A length of original rope hame strap still binds the two arms together at the top.
Before the tractor, hames like these were the working heart of every plow team, freight wagon, and farm hitch. The adjustable slotted slides mark this as a more refined set than the plain fixed-staple variety — a teamster could tune the angle of pull to the animal and the job.
CONDITION
Good with age-appropriate wear throughout. Scuffing to the wood and surface oxidation to all iron components; the structure remains sturdy. Original rope binding is present and intact.
