Description

Enoch Joe Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Olla — Fine-Line Diamond & Star Design

A wide-bodied Acoma Pueblo olla painted by Enoch Joe, signed on the underside "Enoch Joe / Acoma N.M." The cream slip ground carries a dense, hand-painted polychrome program: a banded shoulder and base of arching feather-and-spur motifs framing a central register of intricate black fine-line hatching, radiating star bursts, and stacked geometric diamonds. Terracotta-red diamonds anchor the midsection, set against the crisp black-on-cream linework that defines the Acoma tradition.

The form is slip-mold cast and hand painted — a decorative production approach that puts the labor and skill into the surface design rather than coil-building. Acoma's fine-line style demands a steady hand and tight registration across the curved wall, and this example holds the line work evenly through the dense central panel. The rolled rim and underside are finished in a black-and-cream banded border.
